Our research is centered on the three key challenges of scale, corrosion and hydrogen sulphide. Results from these will be integrated into a risk management tool, helping the operator predict the optimal time to intervene.
Scale, corrosion and hydrogen sulphide
The challenges of scaling, corrosion and hydrogen sulphide production are related and have a strong influence on each other. Scale is the term for
salts and minerals that deposit in the wells pipes and valves. Corrosion occurs in interaction between a number of different factors and can cause problems for the structural integrity of the well. The presence of hydrogen sulphide in the reservoir may exacerbate both scaling and corrosion, while also requiring preparedness on the platform, represent a significant operating expense.
We respond to these challenges by developing both chemical and mechanical solutions that combat scale and corrosion and reduce the formation of hydrogen sulphide.
Improved risk management
At the same time, with data from the research, we will create a risk management tool that, using probability calculations and models from the research, helps to calculate and designate the right time to make major maintenance interventions in the wells. By using preventive measures before any production stops, maintenance work becomes more cost-effective.
Basic research in production chemicals
Much of our research deals with the production chemicals used in the industry to combat scale, corrosion and hydrogen sulphide. We do fundamental research into which chemicals perform best and are most environmentally sound. We study how we can increase the effectiveness of these inhibitors, potentially reducing consumption and facilitate use of more environmentally friendly chemicals in future.
Prototypes on the way
Work on improved well chemistry and integrity is in the initial stages, with promising results that may be applied in industry. Currently, we have more than 10 prototypes under testing, and expect measurable results within a few years.
Working with a wide range of partners from research and industry, we engage leading experts on well chemistry and integrity to develop products for research in collaboration with small and large companies.
Collaborating with SHUTE Sensing Solutions, we have developed a polymer prototype from our research, to investigate the load on wells. In this way, we are constantly expanding our knowledge and dataset cloud with new knowledge and data, thus attracting new projects that can strengthen our research.
