What lives beneath offshore platforms?
That question is at the heart of a research collaboration between TotalEnergies, DTU Aqua, Aarhus Universitet’s Department of Ecoscience, DHI and DTU Offshore.
Over the past year, scientists have been collecting vital data on marine biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics around installations in the Danish North Sea. Filmed during a three-week expedition, the video follows researchers as they retrieve underwater sensors, collect seabed samples, and study the behaviour of cod and porpoises around the platforms. Some structures have been in place for half a century, becoming an artificial reef and integral part of the seascape, thereby supporting marine life in unexpected ways.
The insights gathered will help inform decisions about platform decommissioning, environmental protection, and future offshore development, not only in oil and gas but also in offshore wind. Watch the video by TotalEnergies to learn the science, meet the experts, and discover how data from the deep is providing new insights into marine life.
