Collaborative Research for the Energy Transition

Michael collaborates closely with a wide network of academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and technical experts. Within DTU Offshore, he works with geomechanical laboratories and other geoscientists. Externally, his projects span Danish and international partnerships, for example he is currently working on a large Horizon Europe project focused on geothermal energy. His work also draws on field data from companies operating CCS and geothermal sites.

“DTU Offshore offers a unique environment,” he says. “We have the opportunity to conduct high-impact research while staying closely connected to the real-world needs of industry.”

A Vision for Future Energy Systems

Looking ahead, Michael sees great potential in expanding fracture modelling for increasingly complex subsurface conditions - particularly across layered rock formations and in deep crystalline reservoirs. His future work aims to refine these models to better support safe CO₂ storage and scalable geothermal energy.

“Subsurface complexity is a challenge, but also an opportunity. The better we understand fracture behavior across different environments, the more confident we can be in the technologies that will power the energy transition,” he notes.

At DTU Offshore, Michael Welch’s work exemplifies how cutting-edge geoscience can translate into safer, smarter energy solutions - delivering tools and knowledge that move the offshore sector closer to its sustainability goals.
